Commercenter Alabang presents a weekend of creative revelry with Southside Collective, a two-day mini-festival of inspired art, edgy fashion, and indie music. Set on July 18 to 19, 2015 at the mall’s Activity Center, this event is a unique way to explore and experience creative passions.
Southside Collective will feature the work of both established and up-and-coming artists in the country today. Student art organizations Art Association of the Philippines – University of Santo Tomas College of Fine Arts and Design Junior Chapter and the Technological University of the Philippines – College of Architecture and Fine Arts will get to exhibit their work and at the same time get them acquainted with art entrepreneurship.
Among the participating art communes are Turp High, formed in 2014 by young alumni from the University of Santo Tomas looking to spread the word about their art, and Radioactive Mushrooms in the Forest, the duo behind multisensory projects that transport people to different planes both real and imagined.
Independent Filipino publishing house Meganon Comics, which aims to build a sustainable local comics community, will also be joining Southside Collective, together with emerging freelance visual artist Steph Alvarez, whose portraits and illustrations are often described as “whimsical.”
“We are proud to offer this event to the community,” shares Leslie Tagle-Dinglasan, Vice President for Marketing of Commercenter Alabang. “This is our way to give the local creative scene a boost by giving our artists a platform where they can get their work out there.”
Another offering of Southside Collective is a fashion exhibit headlined by designer Gian Romano, who returned to the country after completing his studies in menswear design in Central St. Martin’s London and his apprenticeship with prestigious New York-based intellectual design collective Three Asfour. He has since taken the local fashion scene by storm.
Underground fashion labels Slaves of Liberty, Randolf, Euniform, and Salad Day, which explore subcultures that veer away from the mainstream, will also be at the event. Handpicked for their design philosophy that matches the laidback lifestyle of the south, this new breed of fashion brands could potentially influence the trending aesthetics of the fashionable youth.
As guests marvel at the original work of these visionary artists and designers, their ears will get to feast on fresh music at The Sunset Sessions, featuring four of the most creative young musicians in the local scene today - starting with soul/experimental/fusion group Farewell Fair Weather, dreamy-indie-pop band The Strange Creatures, electro-retro disco-pop trio Tandems ’91, and Carlo Atendido, who will represent the Philippines again in this year in an international DJ competition after bagging third place in 2014 in another international competition. Jamming starts at 4:00PM on both days.
“It’s a great way to bring people together through a great mix of creative experiences,” says Tagle-Dinglasan. “If you appreciate the different expressions of passion – be it art, music, or fashion – then I invite you to drop by The Southside Collective.”
Filipino music and lifestyle website Radio Republic is an online media partner of the event. Southside Collective will be open on July 18 and 19, 2015, from 10:00AM to 8:00PM, at Commercenter Alabang. Entrance is free of charge.
